Wedding Planning: Use Local Wedding Vendors

From flowers to food--source locally. Exotic and out-of-season flowers are often flown from the other side of the world. Think about how much energy it takes to grow, cut, refrigerate, store, and ship. Now, think about how much energy you are saving by supporting a local florist and receiving truly fresh and beautiful blooms. As for food, contact your caterer and encourage the use of local poultry, meats, and vegetables within your dinner menu. Remember, anything sourced locally does not have to travel, be preserved, or refrigerated. Click here to see our guide to local wedding professionals.

Wedding Decorating: Heirloom Decor

We live by the mantra "less is more" and at Hermitage Hill you don't need a lot for a stylish wedding (plus it cuts down on clean-up time- a win-win.) But if you must decorate, consider borrowing: antiques, family heirlooms add a sentimental touch and don't add to the landfill. (When you purchase new and cheap goods on Amazon, they are most likely made overseas-- which is a huge sustainable no-no. Get Crafty! By up-cycling already used items, you are saving these used items from the landfill, which more often than not, becomes the final resting ground for most wedding decor. Pinterest offers a wide selection “do it yourself” refurbishing ideas.

Wedding Location: Unanimous Location - Host your Wedding ceremony and Wedding Reception at the same Venue.

Cut travel time by having your ceremony and reception all in one location. Reducing travel for guests means reducing carbon emissions. Bonus points if the venue accommodates out-of town-guests. Hermitage Hill does all three! (Overnight Suites for you and your guests)

With a little planning, you can have the wedding of your dream and make it a green wedding as well!
